Delayed symptoms after vehicle accidents

Michigan residents who are in motor vehicle accidents can experience delayed symptoms from serious injuries they may sustain. This is in addition to the emotional and mental confusion they may experience.

One of the common symptoms that may not manifest until days after an accident is a headache. It can be indicative of a serious issue, including an injury to the neck, blood clots near the brain or a severe concussion.

Back pain is another symptom that may appear days after an accident. This type of pain may be the result of damage to the nerves in the back, ligaments, vertebrae or muscles. According to a medical facility that treats neck and back pain, lower back pain is found to be a symptom in over half of the cases in which an injury is reported in a rear-impact collision.

People who experience intense stiffness or pain in their shoulder or neck areas or sustain whiplash should seek medical attention. Whiplash injuries can be sustained by being in a vehicle that is rear-ended by another vehicle that is traveling no more than 14 miles an hour. Individuals with whiplash may have to undergo CT scans, X-rays or MRIs to be properly diagnosed.

Individuals whose abdomens are swollen or painful hours or even days after a motor vehicle accident should seek medical attention as soon as possible as the symptom may be an indication of internal bleeding, which can be fatal. Additional symptoms of this condition include fainting, purple bruising and dizziness.

Individuals who have been injured in car accidents may consult with a personal injury attorney to be advised of their legal options. A lawyer may pursue financial damages against the parties whose negligent behavior contributed to the accident. Drunk, distracted or drowsy drivers may be held liable for the victims' medical expenses.
