The NHTSA and drugged driving

Michigan motorists who are concerned about road safety may be interested in an upcoming summit being held by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The agency is taking strides to address the increase in motor vehicle accidents caused by drugged driving. Handling the issue has become particularly urgent with the widespread use of opioids in the country and the increasing number of states legalizing marijuana.

The agency intends to create innovative solutions to enhance safety and reduce the number of fatalities that result from motor vehicle crashes. The NHTSA is using the summit, which is to be held on March 15, to jump-start its initiative and begin a national discourse about the issue.

Many important stakeholders have been invited to work with the United States Department of Transportation to develop a plan and make quantifiable efforts to tackle the issue of drugged driving in the country. These stakeholders include policy and data specialists, local and state elected officials, drug recognition specialists, criminal justice professionals, law enforcement officers and toxicologists.

During the summit, the participants are expected to consider the best ways to collect reliable data, keep track of DUIDs and educate the public about the risks associated with driving while drugged. The participants will also address how to effectively implement DUID regulations and measure the impairment levels of drivers.

A personal injury attorney may be able to assist clients who have been injured in car accidents with obtaining financial compensation. Drivers who engage in negligent driving behaviors, such as texting and driving, driving while sleepy or distracted, speeding or driving while under the influence of drugs, may be held liable. Possible damages include pain and suffering, lost wages, medical expenses and rehabilitation costs incurred by individuals injured in the motor vehicle accident.
