Crash leaves 5 dead in Michigan

A two-car collision left five dead and three critically injured in Oceola Township on May 9. The crash resulted in one vehicle overturning and the other vehicle bursting into flames.

According to Michigan State Police, the nighttime incident took place at the intersection of M-59 and Argentine Road. A car driven by a 22-year-old Fenton man ran a stop sign on Argentine Road then crashed into another vehicle at the intersection.

The driver believed responsible for the crash was injured in the collision and listed in critical condition at the University of Michigan. A 23-year-old male passenger in that vehicle was also critically injured. The other two male passengers, a 20-year-old and a 24-year-old from Fenton, were killed at the scene. The 39-year-old driver of the other vehicle also survived and was taken to the hospital for treatment of critical injuries. The man's three passengers, a 35-year-old woman, her 65-year-old mother and a 73-year-old man were killed. As is often the case with these types of car accidents, police are looking into alcohol use as a possible cause of the crash. Police might also look at the use of cellphones for texting and calling, signs of distracted driving or sleepy driving and speeding.

People who have been injured in an accident caused by an impaired driver may want to meet with a personal injury attorney to see how they can seek compensation for their medical bills and other losses. In the event that a person is killed in such a crash, the surviving family members may also want to have legal assistance in filing a wrongful death lawsuit.
