Some states are more dangerous for motorists than others

Michigan residents may know that the number of traffic fatalities decreased in 2014 in the United States. This may be due to the fact that designs for roads have been improved and safety measures added to help avoid accidents. However, in some states, the numbers of traffic fatalities are still considerably higher than in others.

According to a research organization for traffic safety, 75 percent of truck and motor vehicle and fatalities occurred on rural roads in 15 states even though rural populations are smaller than urban populations. This may be due to the higher likelihood of animals on the road, lack of seat belt usage and speeding. For example, even though statistics for South Carolina show that less than half of its traffic takes place on rural roads, this is where 82 percent of the fatal accidents occurred.

In 2014, drunk driving still accounted for a major cause of car accidents and fatalities. About 33 percent of drivers involved in a fatal accident registered blood alcohol levels at or above the legal limit. Montana drivers showed the highest percentage of drunk drivers with over half registering at or above the legal limit of 0.08 percent.

Massachusetts and Rhode Island were the safest states for drivers, but statistics for Wyoming show that this state had the highest number of traffic accidents in the nation, five times more than the safest states. Out of every 100,000 people in the Wyoming state population, 25.7 motor vehicle deaths occurred.

A family that has suffered the loss of a loved one due to the negligence of another driver may face funeral and burial expenses and loss of that individual's income. A personal injury attorney may assist by examining police reports, witness accounts and other information to prepare a lawsuit to recover those damages.
