Driving the wrong way with Snapchat

Snapchat has garnered attention among social media users in Michigan and around the country. However, its speed filter app has attracted more attention when it was mentioned in several news reports. Two young people died in a fatal car crash after using the Snapchat speed filter to showcase their escapade. Unfortunately, what was planned to be a display of their race with time, turned out to be their final performance. The video that was posted online showed how the driver navigated the vehicle beyond the speed limit. The vehicle charged down the highway accelerating quickly from 82.6 mph to 115.6 mph.

The horrible aftermath of the driver's unwise decision is etched in the minds of the victims' families. The crash resulted in not only the deaths of the 22-year-old driver and his 19-year-old passenger, but a woman and her two children were also killed when the distracted driver cross the highway median and crashed into a minivan. Three people who were in that other vehicle were also injured.

Unfortunately, this tragic situation was another number added to the statistic report regarding the use of the Snapchat speed filter while driving. A court report revealed a similar incident which occurred in 2015. An 18-year-old woman was accused of using the Snapchat speed filter while she was driving 118 mph on a Georgia highway. Although Snapchat denies her use of the app before the accident, the fact remains that the driver she hit suffered traumatic brain injuries.

Car accidents caused by speeding drivers can result in catastrophic results to their passengers as well as to people in other vehicles who are injured in the crash. Victims may want to have the help of a lawyer when they are attempting to be compensated by the at-fault motorist's insurance company for their resulting losses.
