How to Stay Safe on the Road this Winter

There's no doubt about it: winter driving can be stressful. Between frozen windshield wipers, impaired visibility, and icy road conditions, even the most skilled road warrior must confront weather-related elements beyond their control-each of which increases the risk of a serious car accident or fatality. Believe it or not, however, messy winter driving conditions don't present the most dangerous driving situation when it comes to serious and fatal car accidents.

Fatal car accidents spike on Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a joyful holiday for many families in Michigan. However, it can also be a dangerous day of the year that kicks off a season full of heart attacks, flu outbreaks and car accidents. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the death rate in the U.S. rises significantly during the holiday and remains high throughout the rest of the winter.

Teen girl killed in possible drunk driving accident

A 17-year-old girl in Michigan was killed in a three-car collision on Nov. 13. The crash took place at 3:40 p.m. in Alpine Township. A 39-year-old man was driving a Ford Taurus westbound on 6 Mile Road when he failed to stop at a stop sign and hit a Pontiac Montana that was traveling northbound on Fruit Ridge Avenue. The initial collision pushed the Pontiac into the path of a southbound Chevrolet Silverado.

Behaviors associated with aggressive driving

Michigan officials may find it difficult to track aggressive driving clearly because there are so many scenarios in which it could be an issue in a subsequent accident. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration monitors details related to accidents on the nation's roadways, and the agency notes this difficulty in quantifying aggression-related incidents. However, the agency also estimates that more than 55 percent of fatality accidents between 2003 and 2007 involved aggressive driving.
